Sustainable Aviation Fuel

Green Oil Inc’s Contribution to Sustainable Aviation Fuel

GOI is working to support Canada’s transition toward sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) by developing SAF production pathways based on recycled waste oils and other renewable feedstocks. Our approach builds on our existing expertise in collecting and refining used cooking oil and other waste-based materials.

In 2026, GOI was selected as a recipient of funding through the DAIR Green Fund, administered by Downsview Aerospace Innovation & Research (DAIR) in Toronto. This project supports research and development efforts aimed at producing sustainable aviation fuel that meets internationally recognized specifications such as ASTM D7566.

Through this work, GOI aims to help strengthen Canada’s emerging SAF ecosystem, supporting both the civilian aviation sector and the broader aerospace and defense community.

Compatibility with Military Aviation

  • Modern air forces depend on reliable aviation fuel to maintain operations.

  • In Canada, the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) operates a diverse fleet—including fighter jets, transport aircraft, patrol planes, and helicopters—all of which rely on turbine fuels similar to commercial jet fuel.
  • A secure and stable fuel supply is therefore a critical priority for national defense.
  • Canada, along with its NATO partners, is exploring SAF as part of its long-term energy strategy.
  • SAF can be produced from renewable and waste-derived resources such as used cooking oil, animal fats, and non-food biomass.

  • By diversifying fuel sources, SAF helps:
    • strengthen energy security
    •  reduce reliance on traditional petroleum
    • improve supply chain resilience
  • Domestic SAF production can also enhance relia
  • SAF offers a major advantage : compatibility with existing aircraft.
  • When produced under approved pathways such as Hydroprocessed Esters and Fatty Acids (HEFA) and meeting global standards, SAF can be blended with conventional jet fuel and used without engine modifications.
  • This allows both civilian and military aircraft to adopt SAF gradually while maintaining full operational performance.

Route Optimization

The foundation of our reliable service is our ability to efficiently collect used cooking oil from over 6,000 local restaurants across Ontario. For precision and reliability, our R&D team is developing predictive models that forecast oil volumes at each customer site, optimizing collection routes and schedules. These models analyze historical data and customer trends to accurately forecast the volume of oil from each location. This allows us to optimize our collection routes, ensuring timely service for our customers while maximizing fuel efficiency and reducing our carbon footprint.

Innovation in Tools &
Technology

Improving efficiency and safety is a constant priority. We conduct ongoing research into the design and functionality of the tools and equipment used in our operations. A key example is our work on enhancing the containers and tools for storing and moving used cooking oil, such as developing specialized castor wheels for oil drums. These seemingly small innovations significantly improve our team’s workflow, enhance safety, and streamline the entire collection process, allowing us to provide better service with less effort.

Policy Research

The renewable energy sector is dynamic, with policies and regulations constantly evolving. Our team closely monitors these changes to ensure we are not only compliant but also positioned to capitalize on new opportunities. We actively research the economic, legal, and environmental aspects of the clean energy market.
